Those Pesky Humans

Minion Games, 2009

Those Pesky Humans game turns the tables and lets you play the role of the Monsters who are fighting off the annoying Humans who keep invading your dungeon. This game is playable against one or a team of your “friends”. It is highly re-playable due to the variable dungeon tile design and the variety of Avatars and abilities you may choose to play with each game. Mechanics are kept very simple to keep the pace of the game moving quickly.

James Mathe of Minion Games contacted me to illustrate this personal project of his. He had seen my Pewfell graphic novels on his DriveThruComics website. I ended up illustrating all components of the published game, including: box cover art, cards, playing counters, cards, board-tiles and logo design. I also took a major role in play-testing and streamlining of the game’s rules.

Goal of the Game

One Player, or group, plays Those Pesky Humans, who want to delve into the depths of the Monster Lair and achieve fame, acclaim, and lots of cold, hard gold pieces by retrieving the Three Legendary Gem Stones…but at least one of them must make it out alive.

The other Player, as the Monster Lord and his minions, wants very much to keep this from happening.  The Monsters win the game if all of the Human Avatars are killed, protecting the hard-attained hoard.

Player Characters

One player controls the Ogre, the other(s) control the pesky humans. I designed the humans to be a dodgy-looking bunch. Your basic Fantasy RPG Human Classes, plus a big green Ogre who’s hopefully smarter than he looks.

Here are the Monsters that the Ogre player has at their disposal

Here are some of the many cards from the game:

Here are the Room Tiles. They are reversible, so you actually can chose from twice this many to play, making for a different game every time. So much fun doing all this stuff, and a very fun game to play as well!

How about some doors and tokens?:
